The 2009 Bristol City Council elections were held on Thursday 4 June 2009, for 23 seats, that being one third of the total number of councillors. The Liberal Democrats who had been leading a minority administration, managed to win an overall majority of the council, the first time the party had achieved this on Bristol City Council.

The Liberal Democrats were defending 11 seats, the Labour Party 10 and the Conservatives 2.
The Liberal Democrats, who were leading a minority administration, were looking to gain a majority on the council for the first time. They needed to gain 4 seats in order to do that.
The Labour Party was looking to regain the majority they held on the council which they lost in 2003. They needed to gain 12 seats in order to do that.
The Conservative Party were looking to increase their representation on the council. Given only 23 seats were up for election in 2009, it was be impossible for them to win a majority.
